Joseph Waters enlisted on August 30, 1861, and was mustered into the 3rd Battery Iowa Light Artillery on September 25, 1861, as a musician (bugler).
The 3rd Battery Iowa Light Artillery mustered into service on September 24, 1861; the battery fought at Pea Ridge and Helena, and participated in the Little Rock campaign.
Waters mustered out with the regiment on October 23, 1865, at Davenport, Iowa. He died in Seattle, Washington, on December 3, 1915.
