Thomas Ward served in the Cass County, Missouri Home Guards in 1861; he enlisted again on August 15, 1862, and was mustered into Company B, 12th Kansas Infantry on September 25, 1862, as a corporal.

The 12th Kansas Infantry was organized in September 1862 at Paola, Kansas; they saw action during Frederick Steele’s Camden Expedition.

Ward and the 12th Kansas Infantry mustered out on June 30, 1865. He died in Urbana, Ohio, on November 18, 1921.
