George Stratton, a native of Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and a resident of Rockford, Illinois, began his Civil War career as a private in the 12th Illinois Cavalry; on November 30, 1863, he enlisted in Company K of the 17th at Rockford, Illinois, and was mustered in as the company’s captain on January 25, 1864, at St. Charles, Missouri, for three years. He resigned on May 17, 1865. The 17th Illinois helped pursue General Sterling Price during his raid through Missouri in 1864.
