John Smith enlisted as a private in Company H, 18th Missouri Infantry on October 21, 1862, at Columbia, Missouri. He saw action at Corinth, Kennesaw Mountain, during Sherman’s “March to the Sea,” and at Bentonville. He was promoted to second lieutenant on June 16, 1865, and assigned to Company K. Smith was mustered out with the regiment on July 18, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky.
