John Smith, a native of Washington County, Ohio, and a resident of Crawfordville, Iowa, enlisted as a private in Company I, 25th Iowa Infantry on August 1, 1862; he was mustered into service on August 28, 1862. On January 11, 1863 he was wounded at the Battle of Fort Hindman (Arkansas Post), Arkansas. He was discharged in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 11, 1864, for promotion to sergeant major in the 68th U. S. Colored Infantry; he was later promoted to lieutenant and assigned to Company D.
Smith resigned his commission on December 15, 1865.
