George Smith enlisted as a private in Company F, 1st Iowa Infantry on April 23, 1861, and was mustered into service on May 14, 1861; he mustered out on August 21, 1861, after fighting in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek.

On September 25, 1861, he enlisted in Company C, 4th Iowa Cavalry as second sergeant and was mustered in on November 11, 1861; he was discharged on October 13, 1863. The same day Smith enlisted as a lieutenant in the 13th Kansas Infantry and assumed the duties of regimental adjutant. During Smith’s term of service, the 4th Iowa Cavalry participated in the Vicksburg campaign, while the 13th Kansas performed garrison duty in Van Buren, Fort Smith, and Little Rock, Arkansas.

Smith was mustered out of service on June 26, 1865, at Little Rock, Arkansas. He died on September 15, 1929, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
