Henry Simons of Holton, Kansas, a native of Oswego, New York, enlisted in Company A, 5th Kansas Cavalry on July 16, 1861, at Leavenworth, Kansas. He was promoted to second lieutenant on November 11, 1862, and assigned to Company E.
The 5th Kansas Cavalry fought in the 1863 battles of Helena and Pine Bluff, and the 1864 battles of Lexington, Little Blue River, Independence, Byram’s Ford, Westport, Mine Creek, and Newtonia.
Simons was dishonorably discharged on February 22, 1864, at Pine Bluff, Arkansas, by order of General Frederick Steele.
