Carlton Shamp enlisted in Company D, 21st Missouri Infantry on February 1, 1862, as a musician; in May 1864 he was promoted to principal musician and transferred to the regiment’s non-commissioned staff. On March 1, 1865, Shamp was promoted to first sergeant and transferred to Company K.
He was mustered out of the service on April 19, 1866.
During his time with the 21st, the regiment participated in the battles of Shiloh, Iuka, Corinth, the Red River campaign, Tupelo, Nashville, and Fort Blakely.
