Siegmund Sallmann joined Company C, 1st Missouri Volunteers on May 29, 1861, at the St. Louis Arsenal. After participating in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek on August 10, 1861, the regiment was reorganized as the 1st Missouri Light Artillery and Sallmann was promoted to sergeant. Transferred to Battery F in January 1862, he was promoted to second lieutenant in September 1863.
Battery F, 1st Missouri Light Artillery fought in many battles, including Lone Jack, Prairie Grove, the siege of Vicksburg, Spanish Fort, and Fort Blakely.
Sallmann resigned on January 20, 1865, “for the good of the service,” as the battery had been reduced to four guns and he was the junior officer.
