New York native Abel C. Roberts graduated from the University of Michigan medical school in 1853. He moved to Fort Madison, Iowa, in 1859 and became the editor of a Democratic newspaper.
When the Civil War began, Roberts served as a contract surgeon in the military hospitals in Keokuk, Iowa. Appointed to fill the vacant surgeon’s position in the 21st Missouri, he began his duties with the regiment on May 9, 1863, and received his commission on July 16, 1863. In addition to serving as the regimental surgeon, Roberts also was detailed as a brigade surgeon from September 1864 to June 1865.
During his term of service, the 21st fought through the Red River campaign and the battles of Tupelo, Nashville, and Fort Blakely.
He was mustered out on April 19, 1866, and died in 1901.
