Pleasanton, Kansas

Photograph of Pleasanton, Kansas.

Post-Civil War photograph of Pleasanton, Linn County, Kansas, which was founded in 1869; the undated photograph appears to be of the town’s main street. It appears that construction is still being done on the “L. A. Count & Bro.” building, based on the ladder and lumber seen next to the building. The photograph was taken by Robert J. Lloyd, whose photographic business was located in Mound City, Kansas, in 1870.

Although taken after the Civil War, the photograph depicts what would have been a common sight to soldiers and civilians living and working in small towns in wartime Kansas.
Pleasanton was named after Civil War General Alfred Pleasonton; the difference in spelling was made by a postal employee and never changed.

The city of Pleasanton still exists; the 2000 census shows a population of 1,387 and an area of 1.8 square miles.
