John Markley enlisted as a private in Company D, 8th Indiana Infantry on September 5, 1861.
The 8th Indiana Infantry was organized from August 20 to September 5, 1861, and ordered to St. Louis. They fought at Pea Ridge, Hill’s Plantation, and the various battles of the Vicksburg campaign, including Port Gibson, Champion Hill, and Big Black River. In 1864, the 8th was transferred east, and joined General Philip Sheridan for the actions of Winchester, Fisher’s Hill and Cedar Creek in the Shenandoah Valley.
Markley mustered out with the regiment on August 28, 1865, as a private. He died on February 24, 1919, in Richmond, Indiana.
