Born in Galesburg, Illinois, about 1838 and a resident of Muscatine, Iowa in 1861, Newton Long first saw service during the Civil War as a member of the 1st Iowa Infantry. He fought at Wilson’s Creek, was mustered out, then enlisted in Company H, 24th Missouri Infantry on January 25, 1862; he was promoted to second lieutenant in July and to first lieutenant that October. He received his final promotion to captain and company commander on October 7, 1864.
The 24th Missouri Infantry was organized from October to December 1861; they were involved in the Battle of Pea Ridge, the Red River campaign, and the battles of Tupelo, Franklin, and Nashville.
Long and the 24th Missouri Infantry mustered out on February 5, 1865. He died in Adel, Iowa, on April 15, 1875.
