Eugene Kent enlisted on September 5, 1862, and was mustered into Company I, 11th Kansas Cavalry on September 15, 1862, as a private. In September 1863 he was promoted to corporal; on August 22, 1864, he received a discharge for promotion to first lieutenant with Company D, 18th U. S. Colored Infantry. Kent was promoted to captain and commander of Company A in January 1866, and served with that unit until he was mustered out of service on February 21, 1866.
The 18th U. S. Colored Infantry was organized between February 1 and September 28, 1864, and fought in the Battle of Nashville that December. Assigned to garrison duty, the 18th was mustered out on February 21, 1866.
