Henry Hitchcock enlisted as a private on August 14, 1862, at Winona County, Minnesota, in Company D, 7th Minnesota Infantry. On March 18, 1864, he was discharged for promotion to quartermaster sergeant and assigned to the 67th U. S. Colored Infantry.
During Hitchcock’s service with the 7th, the regiment served in campaigns against the Sioux in Minnesota and against Native Americans in the Dakota Territory.
The 67th U. S. Colored Infantry was organized on March 11, 1864, from the 3rd Missouri Colored Infantry; assigned to garrison duty, the 67th was consolidated with the 65th U. S. Colored Infantry on July 12, 1865. The regiment was mustered out of service on January 8, 1867.
Hitchcock mustered out of service on July 12, 1865, when the regiments were consolidated.
