Richie Higgins enlisted as a private in Company G, 1st Missouri Cavalry, on August 1, 1861, at Jacksonville, Illinois; he was mustered in on September 6, 1861, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.
The 1st Missouri Cavalry was organized on July 20, 1861; in addition to scout and patrol duties they saw action at Pea Ridge and in skirmishes in Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Mississippi.
Higgins re-enlisted on February 23, 1864, and was reassigned to Company F. He was mustered out of service on September 1, 1865, at Little Rock, Arkansas. Higgins died in Ruleville, Mississippi, on September 11, 1914.
