Hester Newton enlisted in Company G, 4th Missouri Cavalry, on March 24, 1862, at St. Joseph, Missouri. He was promoted to fourth sergeant on April 16, 1862 and to first lieutenant on December 19, 1862.

Hester and the 4th Missouri Cavalry saw action at the 1862 Battle of Pea Ridge, and the 1864 battles of Brice’s Cross Roads, Little Blue, and Mine Creek.

Hester was mustered out of the service on April 15, 1865; he died on July 21, 1919, at Shelbina, Missouri.
