Robert Heidelberg enlisted as a private in Battery C, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, on September 15, 1862; he was mustered in on September 22, 1862. He was promoted to corporal on March 7, 1863, to sergeant on August 12, 1863, and to first sergeant on November 1, 1864.
Battery C became part of the Mississippi Marine Brigade, and in September 1864 was reorganized as Battery E, 1st Missouri Light Artillery.
Heidelberg performed garrison duty in Vicksburg and Natchez, Mississippi, and was mustered out of service on February 1, 1865.
