Peter Hawton enlisted as a private in Company E, 7th Kansas Cavalry (“Jennison’s Jayhawkers”) on August 6, 1861, as a private.

The 7th Kansas Cavalry was mustered into service on October 26, 1861, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They fought in the battles of Iuka, Corinth, Little Blue River, Independence, Westport, and Mine Creek.

Hawton mustered out with the regiment on September 29, 1865.
