John Hauser was commissioned a captain and mustered into the 49th Wisconsin Infantry on February 16, 1865, at Madison, Wisconsin; he assumed command of Company D. The regiment was sent to Rolla, Missouri, for guard and garrison duty, with Company D assigned to the Big and Little Piney areas. In August 1865, the regiment was re-assigned to St. Louis, Missouri, for prison guard duty.

Hauser was mustered out of service on November 1, 1865; the 49th Wisconsin Infantry was mustered out on November 8, 1865. Hauser died on June 29, 1911.
