Samuel Harrison enlisted as a private in Company B, 7th Minnesota Infantry, at Winona County, Minnesota, on August 17, 1862. He was discharged on December 14, 1864, for promotion to first lieutenant and assigned to Company D, 65th U. S. Colored Infantry.
The 65th U. S. Colored Infantry was organized on March 11, 1864, from the 2nd Missouri Colored Infantry; they were assigned to garrison duty until mustered out of service on January 8, 1867.
Harrison resigned his commission on January 11, 1866. He died on July 19, 1909.
