Robert Hale enlisted as a private in Company D, 8th Kansas Infantry, on October 18, 1861, at Sabetha, Kansas; he was promoted to sergeant on November 9, 1861, and to first sergeant on May 1, 1863.

Hale and Company D served at Fort Kearney, Nebraska, and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, until they joined the rest of the regiment at Nashville, Tennessee, in February 1863. Sergeant Hale was killed in action at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, on September 19, 1863.
