Mexican-American War veteran James Gregg was elected captain of Company C, 23rd Iowa Infantry, on July 24, 1862, and was mustered into the company on September 19, 1862; he resigned on November 25, 1862.

Gregg enlisted and was mustered into the 1st Iowa Light Artillery on December 26, 1863; during his term of service, the battery participated in the Atlanta campaign and the Battle of Nashville.

He mustered out of service on June 12, 1865.
