George Gilson enlisted in Company H, 40th Missouri Infantry, as a recruiting second lieutenant on August 10, 1864, at St. Louis, Missouri. The 40th Missouri Infantry was mustered into service at Benton Barracks (St. Louis) on September 7, 1864.
Gilson was mustered out and commissioned a captain to take command of Company B.
The 40th Missouri Infantry fought at the battles of Franklin and Nashville.
Gilson and the 40th Missouri Infantry were mustered out of service on August 8, 1865.
