John Frost (sitting) enlisted on September 7, 1861, in Company F, 34th Illinois Infantry. He was discharged on March 9, 1864, as a sergeant, and promoted the same day to captain in the 65th U. S. Colored Infantry.
The 65th U. S. Colored Infantry was organized from December 1863 and January 1864 at Benton Barracks (St. Louis), and served on garrison duty at Morganza, Port Hudson and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Frost and the regiment were mustered out of service on January 8, 1867.
John Frost died on May 26, 1917 in Dixon, Illinois.
Benjamin Johnston (standing), a native of Iowa and resident of Keosauqua, enlisted in Company E, 15th Iowa Infantry on October 14, 1861, and was mustered into service on December 1, 1861. The 15th fought at Shiloh, Corinth, and through the Vicksburg campaign. Johnston re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer on December 6, 1863, but was discharged for promotion in the 3rd Missouri Colored Infantry on March 19, 1864.
Commissioned a first lieutenant in the 3rd Missouri Colored Infantry (redesignated the 67th U.S. Colored Infantry), Johnston served with the regiment for more than a year. He was discharged in July 1865 when the 67th was consolidated with the 65th U.S. Colored Infantry.
