Frazell, James A.D.

James A.D. Frazell was born in Madison County, New York, on October 17, 1826, and by 1860 was living in Lykins County, Kansas. He enlisted as a private in Company F, 2nd Kansas Infantry on May 14, 1861, and was mustered into service on June 20, 1861. After participating in the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, Frazell was mustered out with the regiment on October 31, 1861.

Frazell enlisted again, this time as a hospital steward in the 12th Kansas Infantry, on August 19, 1862. The 12th Kansas Infantry was organized at Paola in September 1862 and initially operated along the Kansas-Missouri border, pursuing guerrillas and escorting supply trains. The regiment was involved in General Frederick Steele’s Camden Expedition in 1864, including the battles of Prairie D’Ann and Jenkins Ferry. The 12th spent the remainder of the war on garrison duty in Fort Smith and Little Rock.

Frazell was mustered out with the regiment on June 30, 1865. He died on February 7, 1889, and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Green Center, Kansas.
