A Lieutenant John E. Downing was assigned to Company A, 18th Missouri Cavalry and saw duty in St. Louis, but it is unclear as to whether this is the same officer.
The First National Bank of St. Louis was organized in October 1863 and began operations on October 10 in a building located at the intersection of Fifth Street and Carondelet Avenue.
