James Edgar joined Company H, 11th Missouri Cavalry, as a private, on July 28, 1863; he was promoted to acting regimental sergeant major on December 11, 1863, and to first lieutenant of Company I on June 18, 1864.

The 11th Missouri Cavalry was organized from March to December 1863, and participated in various operations in Missouri and Arkansas as part of the 7th Army Corps for the remainder of the war.

Edgar was discharged on July 15, 1865; he died on November 20, 1913, in Washington, D. C.
