William Dunlap, a resident of Leavenworth, Kansas, enlisted in Company H, 15th Kansas Cavalry on August 12, 1863 and was mustered into service on October 2, 1863. The 15th was stationed at various points in Kansas to guard against Confederate guerrilla incursions, and made occasional forays into Missouri.
Dunlap was discharged from the 15th on September 15, 1864, for promotion and assignment to the 18th U. S. Colored Infantry as a second lieutenant in Company B. Promoted to first lieutenant, Dunlap served as the regiment’s adjutant until the regiment was mustered out of service on February 21, 1866.
Dunlap died on November 30, 1921, at the Soldiers Home in Sawtelle, California.
