Columbus Dale enlisted in Company E, 4th Missouri State Militia Cavalry in March 1862 and mustered in the following month as a second lieutenant.
The 4th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, under the command of Colonel George E. Waring Jr., saw action at Pea Ridge, Little Blue River, Byram’s Ford, and Westport.
Lieutenant Dale was wounded in the side on October 23, 1864, during the fighting along the Big Blue River; he died of his wounds the next day.
