Matthew Cowley mustered into Company I, 9th Kansas Cavalry, as a first lieutenant on March 2, 1862, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
The 9th Kansas Cavalry was organized on March 27, 1862, at Fort Leavenworth; the regiment fought at the 1862 battles of Newtonia and Prairie Grove, and performed scout and garrison duties.
Cowley died of disease on October 2, 1864, while assigned to garrison duty in Little Rock, Arkansas.
