Clark, Elijah A.

Clark, born in Virginia in 1836 and a resident of Wheaton, Illinois, entered the army as assistant surgeon of the 37th Illinois Infantry in September 1861. The 37th participated in the battles of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove, and Clark helped treat the regiment’s wounded after both battles.

Clark was transferred from the 37th Illinois and promoted to surgeon of the 8th Missouri Cavalry in March 1863.

Assigned to the Little Rock General Hospital, Clark resigned on June 30, 1864, to accept a commission as assistant surgeon, U.S. Volunteers. He was dismissed from the service in April 1865.

The 8th Missouri Cavalry fought in the Battle of Prairie Grove, the Little Rock campaign, and the 1864 operations against General Joseph Shelby north of the Arkansas River.

Clark died on April 17, 1871, in Paris, Illinois.
