Nathan Carver enlisted on July 14, 1862, and was mustered into Company A, 9th Kansas Cavalry; he was promoted to corporal on September 25, 1864, and assigned to Company C.

The 9th Kansas Cavalry fought at the 1862 battles of Newtonia and Prairie Grove; the remainder of their time the members of the 9th were engaged in anti-guerilla activities.

Carver and the regiment were mustered out of service on July 17, 1865.
