Antoine Brentano and his brother William enlisted on September 1, 1862, and were mustered into Company B, 13th Kansas Infantry on September 20, 1862. Antoine was mustered in as a corporal, with William as a private. Antoine was promoted to sergeant on December 1, 1862, to first sergeant on April 18, 1863, and to first lieutenant on September 27, 1864.

The 13th Kansas Infantry fought in the 1862 battles of Newtonia and Prairie Grove, and otherwise spent time on scout and garrison duties in Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas, and the Indian Territory.

Brentano mustered out with his regiment on June 26, 1865, at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
