William Armor enlisted in the 1st Missouri State Militia Infantry on December 1, 1861, at St. Joseph, Missouri. He mustered into Company A on March 15, 1862, and was appointed second sergeant; he was promoted to first lieutenant on January 9, 1864. The 1st Missouri was assigned to the St. Louis area to guard railroads and bridges and perform other garrison duties.

Armor mustered out of the 1st Missouri on May 9, 1864, and mustered into the 51st Missouri Infantry on June 10, 1865, as a second lieutenant; he was promoted to first lieutenant on July 8, 1865, and mustered out on August 31, 1865.
