Jonathan Ingham enlisted on December 22, 1863, as a private in Company M, 2nd Minnesota Cavalry, at the age of 43.

The 2nd Minnesota Cavalry was under the command of Colonel Robert N. McLaren; the regiment was assigned to garrison duty, with occasional expeditions in pursuit of wandering bands of Native Americans in Minnesota and the Dakota Territory.

Ingham mustered out on December 4, 1865. The last company of the regiment was mustered out on May 4, 1866.
