George Stone was born in New Hampshire; at the start of the Civil War, he was appointed a lieutenant of the 1st Missouri Infantry, and was promoted to captain on June 10, 1861. After fighting at Wilson’s Creek, the 1st Missouri Infantry was reorganized at St. Louis as the 1st Missouri Light Artillery. As commander of Battery K, Stone participated in the fighting at Forts Henry and Donelson and Shiloh. On September 26, 1862, Stone was promoted to major of the regiment. In 1863 and 1864 he served as chief of artillery of the District of Corinth and the Left Wing, 16th Army Corps. Stone was mustered out of service in June 1864.
After the war, he served an additional twenty years at the War Department in Washington, D. C. He died in New York on November 11, 1913, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
