David Kimmel enlisted in Company K, 10th Missouri Infantry on September 16, 1861, at Macon City, Missouri. On July 25, 1862, he was assigned duties as a nurse at the hospital in Corinth, Mississippi; left behind to treat the wounded at the Battle of Champion Hill, Mississippi, Kimmel was captured on May 26, 1863. Paroled by the Confederates, Kimmel reported at Benton Barracks (St. Louis) on July 15, 1863. Following his parole, he participated in the fighting around Chattanooga in November 1863.

Kimmel mustered out of the service on October 3, 1864, at St. Louis, Missouri.
