Joseph Wadhams enlisted on November 2, 1861, and was mustered into Company G, 8th Kansas Infantry as a private. He was promoted to sergeant on January 1, 1864, and to first sergeant on September 6, 1864.

Company G of the 8th Kansas Infantry was organized in October 1861, at Lawrence, Kansas; after service at Fort Kearney, Nebraska, Company G was engaged in battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga, the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, and Nashville.

Wadhams and the 8th Kansas Infantry mustered out on November 28, 1865.
