William Lusk was commissioned a lieutenant in the 28th Missouri Infantry on June 25, 1862; in October 1862, the 28th Missouri Infantry was reorganized as the 10th Missouri Cavalry at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Lusk was promoted to captain and assumed command of Company E; on December 4, 1862, he was promoted to major. The 10th Missouri Cavalry fought at the battles of Brice’s Cross Roads and Tupelo in Mississippi, then was involved in the pursuit of General Sterling Price during his Missouri raid in 1864, participating in the fighting at Little Blue River, Byram’s Ford, Westport, and Mine Creek. Major Lusk commanded the regiment at the Battle of Mine Creek.

Major Lusk mustered out along with his regiment on June 20, 1865.
