Philander Edmonson enlisted as a private in Company L, 6th Missouri Cavalry, on August 2, 1862, at Mellville, Missouri; he was promoted to corporal on October 7, 1863. During Edmonson’s enlistment the 6th Missouri Cavalry fought at Pea Ridge and through the Vicksburg and Red River campaigns.

Edmonson mustered out with his regiment on August 1, 1865, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
