Cyrus Matthews enlisted on August 1, 1861, and was mustered in as a sergeant in Company G, 1st Missouri Cavalry. On December 6, 1863, he was promoted to first sergeant.

Company G was assigned to the 3rd Battalion of the 1st Missouri Cavalry, and saw action at Pea Ridge. The company also participated in expeditions and skirmishes in Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and southeast Missouri.

Matthews was mustered out on August 25, 1864.
