John Fealey was born in Morgan County, Virginia, and enlisted as a private in Company F, 1st Missouri Cavalry at St. Louis, Missouri, on October 1, 1862.
Fealey was promoted to corporal on January 1, 1864, to sergeant on September 15, 1864, and to first sergeant on February 13, 1865. He was mustered out of service on June 13, 1865.
Company F, part of the regiment’s 3rd Battalion, was serving with the Army of the Ohio on the east side of the Mississippi River when Fealey enlisted. The company served in the Perryville and Stones River campaigns, then returned to the other side of the Mississippi and operated in Missouri and Arkansas until war’s end.
