Galen Norton was mustered in as captain of Company D, 3rd Colorado Infantry on February 28, 1863; that October, the 2nd and 3rd Colorado Infantry were consolidated in St. Louis to form the 2nd Colorado Cavalry. Norton was mustered in as captain of the new regiment’s Company L; he resigned from the army on September 20, 1864.
The 2nd Colorado Cavalry saw action against guerrillas in the Kansas City area, then participated in all the major actions toward the end of General Sterling Price’s Missouri raid in 1864.
Norton died on September 25, 1893, in Washington, D. C.
