Photograph of officers from the 23rd Iowa, outside their quarters; the setting of the photograph is unknown. The photographer’s backmark bears the imprint of Natchez, Mississippi, but there is no evidence that the 23rd Iowa was ever stationed in the Natchez area. It is entirely possible that the photographer was located near the regiment after the fall of Vicksburg and took the photo somewhere in Louisiana.
The 23rd Iowa participated in the Vicksburg and Mobile campaigns.
