Lebbeus Pindall, born in 1832, moved to Monroe County, Missouri in 1856 and began a law practice in Paris, Missouri. In October 1861, he was elected captain of Company B, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Division, Missouri State Guard, and was promoted the following January and became major of the battalion. He also served as the division’s provost marshal.
In April 1862 the Confederate Congress authorized the formation of a battalion of sharpshooters for every infantry brigade. On November 29, 1862, a sharpshooter battalion was organized under the command of Major Lebbeus Pindall and assigned to the 9th Infantry Regiment; they became known as Pindall’s Sharpshooter Battalion. The battalion saw action at Prairie Grove, Helena, Pleasant Hill and Jenkins’ Ferry. Pindall was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 20, 1865. The battalion surrendered on May 26, 1865, and the men received their paroles on June 7.
