William Groves enlisted as a private in a cavalry company attached to the 18th Missouri Infantry on August 25, 1861, at Compton’s Ferry, Missouri; he mustered into service on November 14, 1861. His company subsequently became Company L, 7th Missouri Cavalry.
Groves was appointed sergeant on November 1, 1862 and promoted to second lieutenant on June 25, 1863.
The 7th Missouri Cavalry saw action at Lone Jack and Prairie Grove, and participated in the capture of Little Rock and Frederick Steele’s Camden Expedition.
Grove was mustered out on November 23, 1864, at St. Louis, Missouri. He died in 1904, and was interned at the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas.
