Francis Gulde enlisted on August 13, 1861, as a first lieutenant and was mustered into Company D, 17th Missouri Infantry on September 20, 1861, at the St. Louis Arsenal. Gulde was promoted to captain on May 1, 1862 and transferred to Company F.

During Gulde’s service, the 17th Missouri Infantry fought in the battles of Pea Ridge, Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, the siege of Vicksburg, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and through the Atlanta campaign.

Gulde mustered out of the service on September 28, 1864.
