Martin Himes enlisted as a private in Company H, 34th New Jersey Infantry, on November 9, 1863. The 34th served in Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Louisiana, and fought at Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely. Himes was discharged on June 1, 1865, for promotion to second lieutenant with the 65th U. S. Colored Infantry, and assigned to Company G. On October 1, 1865, Himes was transferred to Company E, 116th U. S. Colored Infantry, and resigned his commission on July 13, 1866.
The 65th U. S. Colored Infantry was organized on March 11, 1864, from the 2nd Missouri Colored Infantry; they were assigned to garrison duty until being mustered out on January 8, 1867.
