David F. How enlisted in Company E, 15th Pennsylvania Infantry as a private; on February 27, 1864, he was mustered out and commissioned first lieutenant in Company C, 10th Missouri Infantry. On March 7, 1864 he was detached and assigned as aide-de-camp to General Washington L. Elliott; he mustered out of the service on September 22, 1864.
